Until recently, paint chip sampling was a common technique for lead testing. However, the technique requires physically removing a portion of the paint. Additionally, the paint chip samples must be sent to a lab, often placing a remodel on hold for several days until the analysis is completed. Paint chip sampling for lead can be useful for small areas where only one or two samples are necessary. However, considering a moderate remodel project can require 10-15 surface samples, the XRF method is clearly superior.
